 The connection is poor.

“I'm watching the eruption right now. It's incredibly powerful.”

“Huh? It sounds chaotic... I can't hear you well...”

“A new island is being born right now.”

“Who's being born... What are you talking about...”

“I'll call you back later. I'm... in... no...danger,” Kimio says slowly before hanging up.

Sunlight filters through the mist, diffused and scattered. A faint shadow stretches from Kimio's feet. Ignoring that shadow, he stares intently at the scene offshore.

通話状態がよくない。

「今、噴火の現場を見ているんだ。迫力満点だよ」

「えっ、事故の現場がどうしたって？　なんだか騒がしい…よく聞こえない…」

「新しい島が今、生まれようとしようとしているんだ」

「誰が生まれた…なに云ってるの…」

「また、後で掛け直す。私は、ダ、イ、ジョウ、ブ」とゆっくり云って喜三夫は電話を切った。

　靄を通して届く日の光は拡散していて、喜三夫の足元からはぼんやりとした影が伸びている。そんな影には目もくれず、彼は沖合の光景をじっと見つめた。

 I made English translation of my seven short stories. I employed AI to translate and checked myself later, They are good enough to give the reader some idea of what I write. However, they need polishing by the hand of professional native speaker.

私の短編小説７作を英訳しました。AIの力を借りて荒翻訳し、後に自分でチェックしました。この段階で私の作品に込めた意図は伝わると思います。しかし、最終的にはネイティブチェックが必要です。

 These days, I do not have long hours to work on artworks, I only have fragmented time. So, I make use of the broken time to do English translation of my short stories. But he sat here, deftly folding small pieces of paper, making many cranes, using colorful papers. It must have taken quite a while. He probably enjoyed folding them while slowly savoring his coffee. Then, before leaving. he arranged them here like a gift for other visitors to enjoy. I imagined that. And I thought: This is a sight you can only see in Japan. In a small café in a rural town, a heartwarming, peaceful scene like this is created so casually. Only in Japan. Don't you agree?"

「僕は想像してみたんです」 若い旅行者は言った。「この町の誰かがここに座った。買い物に来たのか、暇つぶしなのか分からない。でもここに座って、小さな紙を器用に折って、鶴を何羽も作った。色とりどりの紙を使って。随分時間がかかったでしょう。きっとコーヒーをゆっくり味わいながら楽しんで折ったのでしょうね。そして、それらを他の来客が楽しめるように贈り物のようにここに並べて帰っていった。そういうことを想像してみたんです。そして、思いました。これは日本でしか見られない光景だと。田舎町の小さなカフェで、こういう何かほっとさせるような、平和な光景がさりげなく作り出されている。オンリー・イン・ジャパンです。そう思いませんか？」

A short story ”From Hahalei Bay" 短編小説「ハナレイ湾から」

 短編小説を書き上げました。400字詰30枚。タイトルは「ハナレイ湾から」。村上春樹さんの短編「ハナレイ・ベイ」とそれを元にした映画に触発されて書きました。原作よりも映画の方が心にしみました。今、AI翻訳の助けを借りながら英訳しています。I wrote a short story titled "From Hanalei Bay", being inspired by Haruki Murakami's short stroy "Hanalei Bay" and a movie based on it. I felt more with the movie version than the original story. Presently, I am making English translation with a help of AI translator.

Nature artist

 Satoru Abe, a Japanese American artist passed away in the beginning of this year. His memorial service will be held in Hawaii this August. He got inspirations from the nature of Hawaii. He created many sculptures, paintings, and drawings.

The warm, embracing scent of a parent's heart, like the scent of plum blossoms.

The thoughtfulness of a parent who watches over the children so that they can live happily.

The heart of a parent who wants to share in their children's joys.

I really want to deliver this heart of the parent of humanity.

After death 死後について

After death, there are various possibilities: 1. you go there, 2. you are reborn here, 3. it ends once and for all. My favorite is number 2. because I am living in this body now, and I am satisfied with this body. This body is wonderful: what's in my head, what's in my chest and stomach, the five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and my hands and feet to accomplish things. All of these are first-class essential tools for living in this world. After I die, I would like to obtain this body again, be reborn in this world, and live.

 The most famous and well known word "breakfast" is probably "Breakfast at Tiffany's". A Truman Capote novel. In my case, it is not as gorgeous an image as Tiffany. My memorable breakfast is one at Liliha Bakery in Honolulu. I loved hot cakes and papaya served there. The story of an island is a very long one, much longer than human lives. 島の物語はとても長い。私たちの一生をはるかに超えたもの、、。

 

Flat fish's story 平らな魚の物語

 Flat fish is flat, like a drawing board. So, I painted some stories on it. Flat fish is sometimes called sole. It sounds the same as soul. That interested me. 平らな魚は画用紙のように平らです。それでそこに物語を描きました。平らな魚はsole（ソウル）と呼ばれます。Soul（魂）と同じ発音なのが面白い。

Rendezvous at winter wonderland

 The cold front covered my area and it brought some snow. When I walked in snow, the snow flakes were swirling around me. It was like I was dancing with the flakes. Then I got an inspiration for this painting. 寒冷前線が私の住む地域を覆い、幾らかの雪をもたらしました。雪の中を歩いていると雪と一緒にダンスをしているような気がしました。それがインスピレーションになって、この絵ができました。

Migration

 On a wintry day, I looked at the sky and saw shafts of sun ray coming down from the clouds. That scene gave me an inspiration for this painting. 冬の日、空を見上げると太陽の光線が雲間からさしていました。 それにインスピレーションを得てこの絵を描きました。

Homage to an island artist, Satoru Abe 島の芸術家サトル・アベに捧ぐ

 The title is: Homage to an island artist. The artist, Satoru Abe of Hawaii, loved the island nature motifs, like trees and leaves. Now that he passed away, I imagine him being a part of the nature. He also liked to wear white T-shirt and beige pants always so I depicted him in airy T and pants. 題名は「島の芸術家に捧ぐ」です。彼、サトル・アベ、は島の自然を好んでアートに取り入れました。この絵では、彼を自然の一部として描きました。白いTシャツとベージュのズボンが彼のいつもの仕事着でしたので、その姿を風の中に描きました。

A sad news, 悲しい知らせ

 A sad news hit me today; Satoru Abe, a great artist in Hawaii, passed away. I will paint something in tribute to him, but for now I post my haiga+haibun about him. I made it several years ago. 悲しい知らせが今日届きました。ハワイ在住の偉大な芸術家、サトル・アベ氏の訃報です。彼のためにこれから何か描くと思いますが、今日は、以前に制作した俳画と俳文を掲載します。

Prep for the next season 次の季節への準備

 Title is "Prep for the next season".

Trees in winter time are without leaves, just bare branches. I imagined they would need green power to have leaves again. Then I thought four-petal clover would be a good symbol of the green power. In the painting, the clovers are embedded in trees. 題名は「次の季節への準備」です。冬の木立は葉を失くした枝ばかりです。新季節に再び緑の葉を生むグリーンパワーというものを考え、そのシンボルとして四つ葉のクローバーを選びました。そのクローバーを木々に埋め込んでいる絵を描きました。

Cycle of life, 命のサイクル

The title is "Cycle of Life". The idea of rebirth is depicted in this painting. When a person dies, he/she returns the borrowed body to God. The soul departs from the body, being embraced by God until it borrows a new body and is born into this world. 題名は「命のサイクル」。人は死の時に借り物の身体を神に返し、魂は身体から離れ、神に抱えられ、のちに新しい身体を借りてこの世に生まれてきます。生まれ変わりの思想を絵にしてみました。
